Operational for more than 25 years, Southern Environmental Law Center (SLEC) addresses major environmental issues in the southwestern United States. Located in Birmingham, Ala., the agency is responsible for protecting environment in the states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. It handles various issues pertaining to global warming, clean energy, coast and wetlands, clean water and forest conservation. The center has handled southern forest issues, such as coal mining, road less areas and wilderness, pine forests and timber projects. SELC's Reed Writing Award honors story tellers who capture in words the landscapes and traditions in transition.
