The Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles is the voice of Jewish Los Angeles, and the Goldsmith Center-Jewish Federation community is the central address of Jewish life for some 520,000 Jews in the Greater Los Angeles area. The federation maintains offices in West Hills, serving the Five Valley area and Torrance, serving the South Bay. For thousands of years, the Jewish people have had a tradition of taking care of people in desperate need. Today, that tradition continues through the work of The Jewish Federation. The Federation is the central planning, coordinating and fundraising body for 18 local and international agencies that offer the entire community a broad range of humanitarian programs. The United Jewish Fund, the annual fundraising campaign, supports these programs and is the largest single year-round fundraising endeavor in the Jewish community. The organization supports a variety of programs for people in need on a nonsectarian basis, in Los Angeles and in over 58 countries around the world. Its programs offer care for the elderly; day care for toddlers; relief to people with AIDS; help to battered women; free health care and job training for new immigrants; rescue for families in the Former Soviet Union, resettlement services for people in Israel and Los Angeles; and scholarships and Israel Experience programs for students.
