Formed in 1866, the Kern County Sheriff's Office is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in Kern County, Calif. It is charged with the responsibility of providing bailiff and prisoner transportation service to courts, search and rescue, coroner services, and serves civil process and lawsuit papers. The sheriff's office employs a staff of more than 1,050 full- and part-time, sworn and nonsworn officers, civilians and community volunteers. The Kern County Sheriff's Office operates a detention bureau that has an average daily population of approximately 2,500 inmates. Located in Bakersfield, Calif., it maintains a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team that specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations.
