History
OJS was founded in 1994, in order to provide guidance and friendship to disadvantaged youth who show academic promise but are not likely to attend college without assistance. OJS helps these promising students of the Greater Long Beach area by providing: * Mentors to build strong relationships for guidance and leadership * Assistance in attaining scholarships to lower the financial barriers to higher education * Educational, social and cultural enrichment programs to expand their world-views and demonstrate the power of higher education * A networking environment to ensure a supportive education community OJS is unique because it provides each enrolled child with a committed role model who serves as a mentor for the child for five years beginning in the 8th grade and continuing through the 12th grade. Upon program completion, graduates are eligible for scholarships that are applied to college tuition and related expenses. OJS works with the Long Beach Unified School District, Long
