Manhattan Beach Fire Department
The Manhattan Beach Police Department has been serving the Manhattan Beach community for more than 60 years. The Police Department is headquartered in a new, state-of-the-art shared Police and Fire Safety facility. MBPD employs approximately 65 sworn and 35 civilian full-time employees, and operates under two divisions: Administration/Investigations and Field Operations. Police Chief Rod Uyeda leads the department, and he is supported by two Captains and four Lieutenants. Uyeda began working for the city in January, 2006, previously having worked at the Pasadena Police Department for more than 29 years. To reach the office of the chief, call 310-802-5103. The Administration Division operates under four bureaus: Detective, Human Resources and Training, Crime Prevention and Training, and Records. The division also manages payroll and accounting functions, manages department-specific state and federal grant funding, prepares and manages the department's budget, conducts Internal Affairs investigations, and responds to citizen complaints. The Patrol Bureau is the largest bureau in the entire department, with a full-time authorized staff of 37 uniformed sworn personnel, including two lieutenants, seven sergeants, and 28 patrol officers. Together, they provide 24/7 emergency response. Special programs currently operated under the Patrol Bureau include a K-9 program, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, crisis negotiation team, South Bay Platoon, beach patrol, bike patrol, Crime Scene Investigations (CSI), a field training officer program, and a reserve officer program. The city has one of the most active Neighborhood Watch programs in the nation, with nearly 500 residents currently participating as Neighborhood Watch block captains, covering the majority of the city's four square miles.
