The town of East Hampton lies at the eastern tip of Long Island’s South Fork, and includes the village of East Hampton as well as the hamlets of Montauk, Amagansett, Wainscott and Springs and part of Sag Harbor. Surrounded by water on three sides, East Hampton, with its neighbors, is part of the area often referred to as “The Hamptons,” long considered to be a seasonal playground of the rich and famous and the East Coast professional elite. East Hampton is known for being a study in contrasts—acres of green farmland lie next to pristine beaches. Its beaches are considered to be among the country’s best. Though life here undoubtedly includes celebrities from the arts, business and politics, Main Street in East Hampton village is charming, with tree-shaded lanes, world-class village shops and historic buildings. The township has aggressively pursued zoning ordinances to protect its rural character. East Hampton also has a reputation as a haven for artists. Springs is known in art circles as the cradle of the abstract expressionist movement—artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning worked here, as did important writers like Kurt Vonnegut and John Steinbeck. At the far eastern end of East Hampton, the beach resort of Montauk is home to the largest commercial fishing fleet in New York State. Its many restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts make Montauk a popular vacation spot. White sands and impressive waves are ideal for world-class surfing, and spotting whales and seals. On a clear day, the coasts of Connecticut and Rhode Island appear over the horizon.
