Sedgwick is one of three middle schools in West Hartford. Between 1931, when it opened, and 1956, Sedgwick served elementary school students as well as junior high students. Today, the school has almost 900 students, who live mainly in the central and southern part of town. Sedgwick takes its name from William Thompson Sedgwick, who was born in West Hartford and taught biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Most students who attend Sedgwick will move on to Conard High School.
