The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, also known as CMS, is the federal agency responsible for administering the Medicare, Medicaid and State Children's Health Insurance programs. It also administers Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and several other health-related programs. CMS has been operational for more than 50 years. The agency s Medicare program is a health insurance program for people of 65 years and above, people below age of 65 years with certain disabilities and people of all ages with end-stage renal disease. It offers Medicaid program that is available only to certain low-income individuals and families who fit into an eligibility group recognized by the federal and state laws. CMS is a part of Department of Health and Human Services. Headquartered in Baltimore, it has regional offices in Seattle, San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Dallas, Chicago, Denver and Atlanta.
