Founded in 1969, the Union of Concerned Scientists is one of the leading science-based nonprofit organizations in the world. It began as collaboration between students and faculty members in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. The organization is an alliance of more than 250,000 citizens and scientists. The Union of Concerned Scientists is an environmental organization that researches air quality, alternative energy sources, food safety and other public health issues, as well as the impact of global warming and nuclear war. It publishes the Catalyst magazine and Earthwise newsletter. The Union of Concerned Scientists has offices in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.
