Located on approximately 20 acres of land, Mount Carmel Baptist Church is "an evangelistic ministry dedicated to reaching people and changing lives with the gospel of Jesus Christ," according to the church's Web site. The campus includes a bookstore, Leviticus Christian Bookstore. Having its beginnings with an organizational meeting that took place in 1933, Mount Carmel relocated to Campbellton Road from the Summerhill area. Since 1975, Rev. Timothy Flemming Sr. has been leading this historic church, which estimates membership at more than 10,000. Called a "gifted firebrand pulpiteer of our times" by The New York Times, Pastor Flemming, a native of Macon, was invited by former U.S. President Bill Clinton to be a part of the advisory committee for the President's Health Plan. Known for his singing as he is for his preaching, Flemming launched a record label for gospel artists. His son, Timothy Flemming Jr., is co-pastor of Mount Carmel. Broadcasts of Mount Carmel services air on The Word Network, Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters and WATC-TV57.
