If you are looking for an authentic African grocery then stop in at the Ivoire Market in the West End. At the Lee Street grocery, you will find meat such as beef, lamb and goat, medicine such as UDA and canned as well as bagged goods from Ghana, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast. And if you have a moment, after you shop, then listen to the cashier tell African tales such as how the Mai fish curls itself to sink deep into the sand and survive there for up to six months during a drought. For this reason, many older Africans will not eat this fish, he says.

Fibs Beauty

For nine years, Fofana International Beauty Supply, has satisfied customers in the West End and surrounding areas with beauty supplies and other items from hairs, wigs and eye lashes to socks, shea butter and soaps. The store also ships to other states and international locations. The store's owner, known affectionately as the "Sock and Pony Man" developed his own hair after hearing customers complaining about hair that frizzes and curls that go flat. His creation, called African Pony, is made with synthetic material and a secret chemical agent, that makes the hair look and stay curly, he says. He also designed Compassion, which is 100 percent human hair.
