The City of Chicago Department of Law seeks to provide legal advice and guidance to the city, its departments, officials and employees; save taxpayer dollars by effectively representing clients in legal transactions and civil litigation; and improve the quality of life in the city by enforcing the municipal code. The department has more than 270 attorneys who represent more than 40 city departments. It has 15 divisions that handle litigation and transactional and legislative projects. The City of Chicago Department of Law handles affirmative and defensive litigation. The department s attorneys litigate civil cases that involve constitutional issues, such as due process, civil rights, equal protection and the First Amendment.
