Kirby School District 140 serves more than 4,000 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in portions of Tinley Park, Orland Park and Orland Hills. Its seven schools are John A. Bannes Elementary, Fernway Park Elementary, Helen Keller Elementary, Christa McAuliffe Elementary, Millenium Elementary, Virgil I. Grissom Middle School and Prairie View Middle School.
The average class size is slightly above state average, as are teacher salaries. Overall performance on all state tests is typically more than 10 percentage points higher than the state average.
Chuck Augustyniak is the president of the seven-member Board of Education. It meets one Thursday a month at the Administration Center near Grissom Middle School. Committee meetings are scheduled as needed. Michael J. Byrne is the superintendent.
