MATEP, also known as Medical Area Total Energy Plant, is a cogeneration power facility that supplies steam, water and electricity for more than 9 million square feet of space. It serves various educational institutions, medical research centers, clinical laboratories and hospitals. Established in 1980, the company is spread over an area of more than 200 acres. It provides heating and cooling services residential and commercial customers. Medical Area Total Energy Plant features various equipment, including gas turbines, heat recovery boilers, and electrical switchgears and generators. The company is operated by Advanced Energy Systems (AES), which is an unregulated subsidiary of NSTAR. NSTAR is a publicly traded diversified utility company that serves over 500,000 customers in eastern and central Massachusetts.
