The Assessing Department is responsible for determining the value of all 143,000 real estate and 5,000 personal properties in the city, and setting the tax rate accordingly by January 1 of each year. The 2010 residential rate is $11.88 and the commercial rate is $29.38.
The department sends out all property tax records, keeps track of ownership and property changes based on transactions at the Registry of Deeds, and sends out bills for motor vehicle excise and boat excise tax.
From abatements to condo conversions, the department provides a wealth of information through the City of Boston website. Taxpayers can also make payments online, or in person through the Taxpayer Referral & Assistance Center (TRAC), a one-stop-shop for all tax related issues. Call or visit on the office on third floor of City Hall during businesses hours, or submit a request with questions or concerns anytime through an online form.
