Founded in 1991, Boston Public Schools serves more than 55,000 students from prekindergarten through grade 12 in over 140 schools. Its list of schools includes early learning centers, elementary, middle and high schools. It offers studies in a wide range of subjects, which include art, science, social studies, mathematics, English, family and consumer science, health education and business studies. It offers foreign language courses in various international languages, including French, German, Spanish and Japanese. It offers art education classes in dance, music, theater and visual arts. It also offers distance learning programs, which provide live, direct student instruction and ongoing professional development for teachers via satellite broadcasts. The district also runs alternative programs, and exam and special education schools, and is headquartered in Boston.
