Established in 1979, Independence House is a private, nonprofit organization that serves woman and children. It provides a range of services for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. The organization s services include crisis intervention, medical care, transportation, emergency shelter and support, court advocacy, transitional living, and community education and outreach. Independence House also offers short-term crisis counseling, and encourages women to participate in several support groups. The organization provides information and referrals through its hotline, support groups, advocacy services and bulletin boards. In addition, it offers education and outreach to the community through special events, media campaigns, educational materials and speaker programs. Independence House maintains a location in Hyannis, Mass.
