19 Bar opened in 1952 in Loring Park, an historically gay neighborhood. While it didn't frame itself explicitly as a gay bar, a community formed within this space. The business changed hands in 1957 and began advertising via word-of-mouth as catering specifically to the gay community. Through the following forty years, 19 Bar remained a 3.2 bar, meaning it was only allowed to serve beer up to %3.2 alcohol (i.e. no liquor). After obtaining a full liquor license shortly after the turn of the century, 19 Bar began attracting a wider clientele outside the neighborhood of Loring Park.
