The American Swedish Institute, founded in 1929 by Swan J. Turnblad, is a historic museum offering a variety of programs designed to promote Swedish culture. The institute offers adult education, Swedish language courses, fitness and dance classes and Swedish folk arts and crafts. It also showcases Swedish films and holds library lectures and forums. The Turnblad mansion that houses the institute, is on the national register of historic places in Minneapolis. The museum displays the institute's collection of Swedish glass, decorative and fine arts, textiles and other ethnic items from Sweden. It exhibits and explores the local Swedish-American community through photographs, diaries, vintage recordings and immigrant artifacts. The American Swedish Institute has a museum shop that sells imported Swedish and Scandinavian gift items, such as books, cards, prints, cassettes and CDs.
