The University of Maryland Physics Education Research Group (UMD-PERG) is an interdisciplinary team dedicated to studying learning and teaching in physics, engineering, and science. They focus on designing learning environments and materials that integrate students' cognitive, social, and cultural resources, while also exploring the role of culture in science learning and educational change. UMD-PERG utilizes video-based analysis, socio-cultural and cognitive models of learning, and tools from ethnographic traditions to inform their research. Comprised of members from the departments of Physics, College of Math and Natural Sciences, and Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, College of Education, the group collaborates with K-12 teachers and university faculty to develop inquiry-based science and socio-political discussions.
