History
Place Insurance was incorporated in 1911, but can trace its roots back into the mid 1800's when Cortland attorney Charles Foster began selling insurance policies. The exact year that Mr. Foster started selling insurance policies is unknown, but the agency has a number of policies on record from the late 1850's. Charles F. Brown, great grandfather of James W. Place purchased the agency in 1911 and ran it until 1946. At the age of 90, Mr. Brown sold the agency to J. Demster Place, who sold it to John D. Place, Jr. in 1948. James Place became an officer of the agency in 1974 and purchased the agency in 1982. Stephen D. Franco, a Cortland native, joined Place Agency, Inc. as a partner and officer in 2009. In 2011 after 100 years in the Place family, Steve Franco purchased the agency from Jim Place.
