Founded in 1926, CNEWA or Catholic Near East Welfare Association supports the needy throughout the Middle East, northeast Africa, India and eastern Europe. It aims to support the pastoral mission and institutions of the Eastern Catholic churches, and provide humanitarian assistance to those in need. CNEWA prepares priests and religious leaders for their roles of service in the church, and builds, equips and maintains churches, rectories, schools, seminaries, convents and other pastoral structures. It repairs homes and provides medical care and other emergency assistance for the relief of suffering people, and supports child care institutions and schools. The association establishes and maintains many educational, medical, charitable and cultural institutions, and supports programs to raise consciousness about the churches. It is headquartered in New York City.
