Established business owners of Yatenga World Music Venue and Yatenga French Bistro, Sivan Baron and Abdel Ouedraogo are veteran contributors to the music and dining scene in new Harlem. With the opening of Silvana in June 2013, the couple challenged themselves to create a space that appeals on just about every level- from the fair-trade organic coffee and teas (from Brooklyn Roasting Company and Miss Tea) to the hand-picked products for sale in its boutique to the delicious (and previously unavailable in Harlem) Middle Eastern cuisine to its world-class entertainment. When you first walk through Silvana's baby blue doors, you may be a bit confused, but one of its welcoming staff will quickly begin introducing you to all of its hidden treasures. On the street level, Silvana is a cafe/boutique which serves a full menu of Middle Eastern food (falafel, shawarma, shakshuka, etc) handcrafted coffee and tea beverages, as well as wine and beer and sells a wide, ever-changing variety of world and local goods- handmade jewelry from Israel, colorful Ethiopian bags and hats, t-shirts from an Harlem (by way of Israel) designer, home decor from India, Moroccan rugs and pillowcases, quirky wooden dolls from Burkina Faso, and much more- sure to satisfy any gift need that may arise. Sit at one of the vintage, cafeteria-style communal tables with swivel seats and you'll be joined by an eclectic mix of families, students, freelancers and interesting characters taking advantage of the free wi-fi and affordable food available in the cafe. If you come in the evening, you'll notice music drifting up from below. When you venture downstairs, you'll discover a restaurant/bar/lounge with a line-up of up to 4 live bands and 1 dj each night, open until the wee hours of the morning. The cabaret-style tables near the stage are decorated with pictures that invoke the spirit of the sights, sounds, and smells of a Middle Eastern market. Towards the back you'll find Moroccan-style tray tables surrounded by long benches and low stools, making it the perfect place to share a few plates and drinks with old friends or get to know a new date. Here you can enjoy the same yummy food as upstairs, with a signature cocktail (try the Luchini Green or the Wild Orchid) or a wide variety or 14 craft and traditional draft beers (try the Speakeasy Prohibition and, if you dare, the Delirium Tremens).
