History
Call me a dreamer. I want to change the world. After spending years as an international buyer, I think we can do better. My trips overseas brought me face to face with the people behind the items we buy, people struggling to survive. In 2006, I walked away from my career to open The Silk Road. It was time to stand up for my beliefs. I believe everyone should be paid fairly and treated justly. I don't think it's cool to enslave children, or force women into prostitution. A family shouldn't be afraid of the water they drink. Every child should have the opportunity to learn. Fair trade tries to make that happen. I also believe we need to take care of our planet. This is our home. We can't just pack up and move if we destroy it. We need to be responsible, sustainable, and take care of it. Call me a social activist. I'm okay with that. Every story of a child being rescued from slavery, or educated, or drinking clean water for the first time reinforces that this is my path.
