George Sprenkle, Bill Sprenkle and Harold Smith, operating as Yorkaire Cooling and Heating Sales, started the company in April of 1955. One of the company's first projects was the mechanical remodeling of the York County Courthouse. Throughout the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's the company tackled major projects such as the remodeling of the York Hospital and Red Lion Area Senior High School and was the mechanical contractor for expansions in the Caterpillar Tractor and Harley Davidson manufacturing facilities. In 1983, four employees of Yorkaire Cooling and Heating Sales, Charles Lefever, Gary Gillette, Donald Doutrich and Larry Roberts purchased the company and began operation of the firm as Yorkaire, continuing to operate as a full service mechanical contractor. In October of 2001, the Yorkaire name was changed to The Yorkaire Group. The Yorkaire Group provides mechanical contracting and combustion technology related services primarily to the industrial market. The company is headquartered in York, Pa.
