Sumner County Sheriff's Office is one of the law enforcement agencies of Tennessee. The department s services and duties are prescribed by the state legislature. The sheriff is responsible for operating the county jails, investigating crimes, making arrests, enforcing traffic regulations on county roads, serving writs, seizing property after judgment, and maintaining communications with other law enforcement organizations. It has countywide jurisdiction and oversees activities in areas where municipal officers cannot operate. Also serving as a tax assessor-collector, the department s crime prevention division provides crime reduction and protection services, community- and school-based programs, crime stoppers, drug and gang information, home inspections, and neighborhood watch programs. Additionally, it offers educational programs pertaining to social, emotional, psychological, and physiological hazards of drug abuse. Located in Gallatin, Tenn., it deals in the development of social competence, communication skills, self-esteem, decision-making skills, conflict resolution, sense of purpose and independence, and other positive alternative activities.
