Gerdau Ameristeel is the second-largest producer of structural steel products in North America. It is a major producer of steel bar products and operates two minimills located in Midlothian, Texas, and Dinwiddie County, Va. These facilities have a combined production capacity of 2.8 million tons of steel. Founded in 1973, with the opening of its Texas plant, it started small with a production capacity of 250,000 tons of steel. Through international expansion, the company has grown considerably. In 1999, its Virginia plant opened, which doubled Gerdau Ameristeel s structural steel capacity and expanded its product line. The utilization of minimill technology is a process that takes recycled scrap steel and melts it in electrical furnaces, and continuous-casting systems form the molten steel into a broad range of products, which include more than 230 different types, sizes and grades of structural steel and bar products.
