Frederick A. Matsen III, M.D. is an internationally recognized expert in reconstructive shoulder surgery. Dr. Matsen earned his M.D. at Baylor University in Texas and served his internship at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore along with two years as a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health. His clinical interests include shoulder reconstructive surgery for arthritis, major rotator cuff deficiencies and failed prior shoulder surgeries. His goal is individualizing treatment to the specific needs of each of his patients. He pioneered the ‘ream and run’ procedure for patients desiring a high level of physical activity and wishing to avoid the potential risks of a plastic socket and bone cement. Dr. Matsen feels most fortunate to be at UW and able to offer his patients a team of experienced professionals who continue to pioneer innovations in patient care.
