Highline Public Schools, based in Burien, Wash., operates various elementary, middle and high schools. The schools offer educational and extracurricular programs to students in grades kindergarten through 12. The school district focuses on literacy and mathematics, and has concentrated its resources on a literacy initiative. The literacy program includes individualized assessment for each student and the use of reading specialists working directly with students. It also includes reading coaches who work with teachers to structure classroom instruction to meet the needs of the student population. Additionally, it provides professional development for teachers to improve instruction and to give struggling students extended opportunities for instruction after school and during the school day. The school district has an enrollment of more than 17,000 students.
