Founded in 1947, Group Health Cooperative is a consumer-governed, nonprofit health care system. The cooperative provides medical coverage and care services to more than 600,000 residents of Washington and northern Idaho. Its wholly owned subsidiary, Group Health Options, serves the needs of large and small employers. The cooperative provides care in over 30 locations and partner hospitals. Group Health Cooperative employs nearly 900 physicians and serves primary and specialty care needs of approximately 400,000 members. The cooperative includes Group Health Center for Health Studies, which is a nonproprietary research institution that conducts and disseminates research and evaluation on the prevention, treatment and management of illnesses. It is a part of Group Health, which operates more than 25 primary care medical centers and over 10 eye care clinics.
