Founded in 1939, the Employment Security Department helps workers and employers succeed in the global economy by delivering employment services. The department collects, analyzes and disseminates job-related data relating to Washington. It publishes job vacancy surveys and benefits reports. The Employment Security Department also manages unemployment insurance benefits. The department offers extended unemployment compensation and trade readjustment and disaster unemployment assistance programs for unemployed workers. It has paid more than $1 billion in unemployment benefits to over 289,000 people. The department manages WorkSource, which was established in 1999 and is a partnership of businesses, government agencies, colleges and nonprofit organizations.
